You don't get to choose the role someone gets to play in your life. Rather, all relationships are assignments and we get to choose how we show up for these assignments.
Are we ready to learn? What are we needing to learn? Are we ready to accept the gift of what this person is teaching us.
We also don't get to choose the lessons nor do we get to choose how long this person will be in our life or what they are meant to teach us.
I was taught this lesson AGAIN recently when I decided someone who came into my life was there to play a certain role.
During this time, I kept opening a course in miracles to the SAME lesson which basically says that since we don't get to choose the role people will play in our lives we both have to show up with openness exactly where we are in that moment and wait for the lessons to reveal themselves.
The plot twist is that despite being able to manifest some things, we don't always get to write the story and control everything; there is a divine hand behind much of what shows up in our lives.
As it turned out, it was the opposite of what I thought it would be but this person was such a teacher for me and held the mirror up to shadow I was still holding onto about everything from my family patterns to what it means to be a woman.
The Course says that we get mad when people don't play the role that we ascribed to them - but the whole point is that we don't get to.
Whether someone is in your life for an elevator ride or three weeks or thirty years - there is always potential for learning if we just show up, surrender our expectations and allow it to unfold and be integrated into our ever evolving human experience - like a flower, to blossom, come to its fullness, and eventually fall back down into the earth to be born again. THAT is the path of the heart.
